Independence Expat Tax was a lifesaver and got me back into compliance with the IRS. I have been living abroad for over 20 years and (wrongly) assumed that since my income was under the foreign exemption limit ($100K~120K in the past 10 years), I didn't have to file my tax returns. A happy benefit of getting back into compliance was that I was able to receive my covid benefit checks, which only go out to those who file their taxes. A year after sorting this out, Independence Expat Tax also guided me through the process of filing my final tax report for expatriation; if you give up your American citizenship, you may be subject to a hefty exit tax from the IRS. Independence helped me understand the details of the exit tax forms and answered all my questions about this complicated and confusing process. There's no way I could have done this on my own!
