I did a 401(k) In-Plan Conversion in 2024. This was a taxable event, since I was converting Pre-Tax dollars to Roth dollars. This produced a 1099-R with box 1 nonzero; box 7 having code “G”; and box 2a equal to box 1. Their website refused to accept this form, stating “There is an error with the information you submitted. If the distribution code below is 6, H, or G, the taxable amount must be zero for this system”. When I contacted support about this, they claimed that “The taxable amount is 0” on my conversion, which is obviously false and dangerously misleading. When I followed up on this, support also advised me to check a box on their website’s 1099-R entry form to indicate “a Roth Conversion”. However, the only such box they have is for amounts which are “not shown in your Form 1099-R…converted to a Roth IRA” — which would be blatantly incorrect for my conversion and the 1099-R I actually received.
