I am eternally grateful that I found gendatabase.com.I had exhausted all avenues in the search for my Grandfathers ID. number, that was urgently needed to apply for his death certificate. This database is very useful for South African genealogy research. Although there is not always a direct link to microfiche films, the reference number is provided, allowing the original films to reviewed on the Familysearch.org website. When I couldn't find any more info on one of my relatives, Gendatabase advised that I apply for a vault copy of the birth certificate and even helped me to obtain the identity number. The membership fee of just under R300 for a month's access is very reasonable.
